Denia is situated between Valencia and Alicante , about 1 hour’s drive
from both airports. It is an old fishing village, where daily caught
seafood is being sold at the main fish market, at the harbour in the early evening. The old part of town behind the Moorish castle is like a
charming village, with its narrow cobble stone streets and many tapas
restaurants, where the local Spanish population goes. The whole place
comes to live late in the evening. Marques De Campo is the main
street where all the shops, bars, cafes and restaurants are located.
There are also many seafood restaurants along the main road at the
harbour where one can eat outdoors on a hot summer’s
day.
For
those who are interested in sailing, there is a modern marina, where one
can hire sailing boats for day trips, or to drink and dine in one of the many
trendy bars and restaurants. There are also car ferries going to Ibiza
from Denia all the year round.
Miles of sandy beaches are close to the harbour and 4 km away from the
port of Denia is the rocky coastline of Las Rotas, which is
the best place for snorkelling and diving, with easy access for
swimmers. It’s a 15 minutes’ walk or 5 minutes’ drive from the house.
From there you can walk or cycle along the coast that goes all the
way to town. There is also a fantastic walk from the house, through the
conserva- tion area and along the coast through a forest alongside
to the sea, ending up in the harbour of Javea. From there you can take a
tour boat back to Denia Harbour along the beautiful coast.
The
excellent golf course of La Sella and Oliva Nova is a 20 minutes’ drive away. It’s open
throughout the year.
Every Monday morning there is a flea market and every Friday morning an
antique market and a vegetable market next to the indoor food market.
There are many festivals throughout the year:
The
Three Kings procession, in January.
The
Fallas in March (15 to 19), the most colourful and interesting festival
of the Valencia region.
Easter procession, in April.
Bonfire night of St.John at the beach, in June.
‘Get the Bull to jump into the sea’, in July.
The
Moors and Christians procession and gun battle in August.
International dance festival in September.
Arts and crafts fair during Christmas in December.
